TowerJazz has over 10 years of mass production MEMS experience servicing market leaders. The company is focused on a collaborative partnership model and applies its foundry experience, silicon MEMS processes and customer oriented team to enable the successful and rapid implementation of both 150mm and 200mm MEMS manufacturing, including both prototype and production.
TowerJazz continues to augment its portfolio of specialty silicon technology by adding MEMS manufacturing to its existing suite of analog and RF CMOS, high speed SiGe, and high voltage technology. This enhances the ability of its customers to create and bring to market more highly integrated analog products. The company works with top tier established companies, as well as start-ups, to bring new technologies from idea to volume production. MEMS is also offered in multiple 6” and 8” manufacturing sites.
The target applications and markets for TowerJazz’s MEMS capabilities are high performance antenna tuning and switching for mobile wireless, and infrared measurement for sensor devices in consumer imaging, security, automotive, industrial, and military applications. In addition, manufacture of companion chips to control the MEMS (power devices and ASICs to drive the MEMS switches and sensors) is attractive, and allows potential to double or triple the number of chips sold for every MEMS project won.
In Israel, TowerJazz is mass producing high end MEMS sensors for the $3.5 billion inertial measurement unit (IMU) navigation market, including applications such as accelerometers, gyroscopes and power management controllers (ASIC). Towerjazz also targets consumer markets with a customized digital speaker process and a Si photonics process.
In the US, TowerJazz is volume producing infrared pixel arrays. In addition, TowerJazz manufactures RF MEMS tuners specifically designed to overcome the antenna performance challenges experienced in today’s LTE smartphones, which have to support an ever growing number of operating modes and frequency bands. These high performing tuning solutions will also be among the technologies of interest to solve 5G handset integration.
MEMS and new process capabilities are being incorporated into high volume applications at a very high rate which appears to have strategic value. In 2016, a significant amount of transition occurred in the MEMS Sensors manufacturing space. This has led to several new lines of business inquiry from top companies for integrating MEMS with image sensor or RF capabilities using TowerJazz’s process transfer capabilities (TOPS) or for offerings in MEMS, but also in other CMOS or power technologies. This has created opportunities for TowerJazz which supports manufacturing at large volumes for consumer markets with a proven track record. Notably, press announcements from TowerJazz customers have included Audio Pixels’ revolutionary technology for its silicon chip loudspeaker, Cavendish-Kinetics’ MEMS SmarTuneTM technology which achieved a record 100 billion cycle reliability, and FLIROneTM which is offering camera products available at the Apple store, and for Android phones. TowerJazz is running MEMS programs in all of its fabs and the Newport Beach facility is focused on high volume, RF, IR sensors and on drive and control chips (companion CMOS chips).
