Keysight Technologies with the University of California San Diego have announced the longest bidirectional phased-array link in the 60 GHz band. At a link distance of 300 m, the 32-element array achieved a data rate of greater than 2 Gbps over all scan angles up to ±45 degrees. Data rates were 4 Gbps at 100 m and 500 Mbps at 800 m over most scan angles. The entire phased array consumed 3 to 4 W of DC power in either its transmit (Tx) or receive (Rx) modes. This is due to the high-performance system-on-a-chip (SoC) designs UC San Diego created using the third-generation silicon germanium BiCMOS standard buried collector (SiGe BiCMOS SBC18H3) process from TowerJazz, the global specialty foundry leader. TowerJazz has developed the nanotechnology to copy the Bible in its entirety into tiny chips. The chips are subsequently mounted to an assortment of jewelry and precious metals like pendants, lockets, watches, and bracelets. Even though it is small, this Jerusalem Nano Bible has every letter and punctuation mark present in the New Testament or Old Hebrew Bible. The content is printed on a silicon chip measuring only 5mm x 5mm. The Jerusalem Nano Bible was the brainchild of the Israeli entrepreneur, Ami Bentov, who partnered with TowerJazz to create the final product.
Israeli specialty foundry TowerJazz announced its novel Empirical ESD Simulation Flow of ESD protection circuits for reliable chip design which supports TowerJazz customers by enabling an optimized solution both in terms of cost and first time success.
TowerJazz’s new concept of Empirical ESD Modeling enables dynamic simulation of ESD protection circuits. It is demonstrated on snapback type protection devices which lack simulation models for most manufacturing technologies offered by foundries. The new concept is based on real device measurements as opposed to theoretical calculations, therefore providing more accurate and reliable simulation data for a given technology.
Tailored ESD protection design is especially crucial in applications where I/O customization is required such as in power management and CMOS image sensors.

(TPSCo) announce a new state of the art CIS process based on stacked deep photodiode, allowing customers to achieve very high NIR sensitivity and realize extremely low cross-talk while keeping low dark current characteristics, using small pixels and high resolution.
This solution targets 3D gesture recognition and gesture control for the consumer, security, automotive and industrial sensors markets. NIR is becoming more and more popular in 3D gesture recognition applications and in automotive active vision applications for better visibility in harsh weather conditions.
Pure-play Israeli foundry TowerJazz has signed on to build a line of first-generation microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)-based loudspeaker semiconductors for Audio Pixels Ltd. The loudspeaker chips will introduce a new generation of sound performance and design demands for devices being built for the consumer electronics, industrial and medical markets, Audio Pixels says.
The company says it chose TowerJazz because of its MEMS manufacturing technology, including its particle-free, deep silicon etch technology and thick films with controlled low stress.
TowerJazz announced it has extended its long term global business partnership with JA Mitsui, a leading financial and banking institution, with whom the company has an established relationship in Japan through its TPSCo Japanese affiliate. The agreement provides the Company with up to $40 million of an asset based loan, which will carry annual interest of Libor+2.0%, mature between 2019 and 2022 and be used to support San Antonio fab growth and ramp-up plans, including cross qualification activities to address the Company’s excess customer demand in its other worldwide fabs.
New wireless standard will significantly speed up communication, but dealing with mmWave technology isn’t going to be simple.
Generally, phased-array devices are made using various processes, but many of today’s devices are based on standard CMOS and silicon-germanium (SiGe). “SiGe technology has already been proven for mmWave phased-array/active antenna applications,” said Amol Kalburge, senior director of strategic marketing at TowerJazz, a specialty foundry vendor.
“Additionally, SiGe enables integration with advanced CMOS and on-chip passives, thus providing area efficient system-on-chip integration capability and a cost/performance tradeoff,” Kalburge said. “We believe that SiGe will play a key enabling role in 5G front-end ICs, and will coexist with other III-V technologies.
Specialty foundry TowerJazz has announced volume production of a new RF technology capable of integrating a wireless front-end module (FEM) on a single chip, tailored to meet Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
The TowerJazz process enables integration of power amplifiers (PAs), switches, and low-noise amplifiers as well as CMOS digital and power control on a single die. TowerJazz is delivering this product now for smartphones, tablets and wearables, and the technology also meets the more universal requirements of IoT applications by providing cost, power, performance and form-factor benefits versus competing solutions.
As an example, TowerJazz has partnered with Skyworks to deliver a first-of-its-kind integrated wireless FEM using this technology. "We are pleased that our long partnership with TowerJazz on SiGe BiCMOS for PA-based products is now in volume production for key customers of Skyworks," says Bill Vaillancourt, general manager & VP Skyworks Connectivity Solutions.
TowerJazz announced its SiGe Terabit Platform targeting high-speed wireline communications for the terabit age. Wireline data traffic is increasing dramatically, with traffic at Google famously increasing by 50 times over the last six to seven years, or at 75 percent per year. Estimates vary, but experts agree on double digit CAGRs and a 2020 market for high speed optical components in excess of $9 billion.
TowerJazz addresses this market through a family of customized foundry silicon-germanium (SiGe) BiCMOS technologies and is announcing availability of its highest performance process to date: S4. TowerJazz customers include the who’s-who for components that carry the world’s high-speed data traffic such as: Broadcom, Inphi, MACOM, Maxim, Maxlinear and Semtech, among others.
Chinese chipmaker 3Peak expects a sharp increase in integrated circuit (IC) shipments this year due as it expands its manufacturing output to a plant in Japan through an extension of its collaboration with Israel's TowerJazz. 3Peak's products are currently solely produced at TowerJazz's 200mm fab in Israel and are now starting to also be made at the TowerJazz Panasonic Semiconductor fab in Japan.
"In 2015, 3PEAK's IC shipments increased 35 percent compared with 2014. With dual sourcing capabilities, we expect to have an increase of 200 percent in 2016," Joe Zhou, Chief Executive of 3Peak, said in a statement on Wednesday.
TowerJazz announced it has completed its acquisition of an 8-inch wafer fabrication facility in San Antonio, Texas from Maxim Integrated. The acquisition will expand TowerJazz’s current worldwide manufacturing capacity, cost-effectively increasing production by approximately 28,000 wafers per month. The availability of capacity is needed to serve current and forecasted customer demand.
TowerJazz offers a broad range of customizable process technologies including SiGe BiCMOS and RF CMOS for RF and HPA applications. For many years it has been Maxim’s supplier for a family of high-end SiGe based products.
As part of the transaction, the firms signed a 15-year supply agreement under which TowerJazz will manufacture products for Maxim in the San Antonio facility.
TowerJazz, TowerJazz Panasonic Semiconductor Co. (TPSCo), and PIXELPLUS announced they have collaborated to produce a state-of-the-art HD and FHD (full HD) SoC security sensor using TPSCo's leading 65nm CIS process.
PIXELPLUS integrates ISP and HD-Analog transmission function onto a CMOS sensor, said to be the first time in the world. The HD-transmission function enables data transmission over coaxial cables to distances longer than 500 meters. PIXELPLUS is said to hold number one position worldwide in the security/surveillance market, which includes 34% market share in 2014 by dominating VGA.
"Through our collaboration with TPSCo, we were able to produce an HD and FHD SoC security sensor with unprecedented performance," said Seo-Kyu Lee, CEO, PIXELPLUS.
TowerJazz announced the signing of a definitive agreement with Semiconductor Laboratory, an Asian Governmental Agency. Under the agreement, TowerJazz will leverage its manufacturing expertise and assets while providing during the coming three years the required process engineering and equipment maintenance support for successful operation of the facility. In addition, TowerJazz will provide support to help establish wafer reclaim capabilities and will provide training and procedures on the establishment of chemical lab capabilities.
The deal will generate revenues of approximately $35 million, which are incremental to TowerJazz’s revenues from its existing manufacturing facilities. This agreement allows TowerJazz to realize profits and cash generation from its valuable manufacturing expertise and its skilled engineering manpower.
TowerJazz and TPSCo announced the development of the first 65nm millimeter wave (mmWave) 110GHz RFCMOS platform targeted for a variety of applications, such as wireless communication (60~77GHz), automotive radar (57~86, mostly 77GHz), and imaging and scanning (100GHz), among others.
TowerJazz and TPSCo are expanding their mmWave platform capabilities by introducing new process modules and comprehensive validated EDA tools and modeling, targeted to support a larger application segment. The platform supports 110GHz with state of the art RF modeling for MOSFETs, inductors and transmission lines, a very large set of metal combination and a full set of RFCMOS elements. RF applications such as WiFi 802.11, Wireless HDMI, and WiGi that require 65nm mmWave technology can now utilize modeling capabilities up to 110GHz. In addition, this platform is automotive qualified at TPSCo's 300mm fab in Uozu, Japan, considered one of the best fabs in the automotive industry.
TowerJazz and TPSCo announced breakthrough in RF technology for next-generation 4G LTE smartphones and IoT devices. Through a collaborative effort, TowerJazz and its subsidiary TPSCo, have developed a new 300mm RF SOI process that can reduce losses in an RF switch by as much as 30% relative to current technology, improving battery life and boosting data rates. The technology is now being sampled to a lead customer.
